Finished models: kits, boxes and cases

A practical notebook on finished scale models: picking kits, inspecting a box before you buy, and the cases, depth and light that keep them presentable.

A finished model is judged twice: once as a build and once as an object sitting in a room. The kit decides how much work you take on, the box inspection decides whether that work is wasted, and the case, its depth and the light around it decide whether anyone ever sees the result properly. Get those three in the right order and the model survives the years; get them wrong and you are repairing something you already built.

Start with the kit, not the subject

Most people choose a subject first and a kit second. It is more useful the other way round. A subject you love in a kit that fights you will sit half built in a box for two years, and a subject you are indifferent to in a kit that goes together cleanly will be finished and on a shelf by spring.

Beginners do best with a small number of parts, one colour scheme, and a scale large enough that the pieces can be handled without tweezers. Scale 1/72 is the common entry point for aircraft and it stays useful later, because the range is wide and the models take up little room. Larger scales are easier on the eyes and harder on the shelf.

Aircraft from 1903 to 1918 are their own discipline. Wire bracing, open cockpits, linen surfaces and very few straight lines. They reward patience and punish hurry, and they are a poor first kit for that reason. Helicopters bring a different problem: rotors, transparent canopies and a lot of small fittings around the hub. Flying boats and floatplanes add struts and water handling, which is fine if you like rigging and tedious if you do not.

Historical replicas and vintage kits are a separate pleasure. A vintage kit is not a worse modern kit, it is a different object, with different plastic, different decals and often a shape that later research corrected. Wooden ship kits sit at the far end: hulls to plank, decks to fit, and rigging that is really a small rope project. If you have never rigged anything, a simple two-masted hull is a better teacher than a three-decker.

For collectors who buy finished work rather than build it, the same logic applies in reverse: you are assessing someone else's choices. A practical guide to that side of the hobby, covering kit selection, pre-purchase checks and display, is collected at scale model collections, and it is worth reading before you spend money on a built model you cannot inspect in person.

What do you check in a box before you buy?

A sealed box tells you less than sellers suggest. What you can check without opening it:

  • Box condition. Crushed corners and water staining suggest storage in a damp garage. Decals and instructions suffer first.
  • Weight and rattle. A kit that rattles has loose sprues, which usually means broken small parts. Compare with a second copy if the shop has one.
  • Moulding date and country. Old tooling is not automatically bad, but a 1960s mould with raised panel lines will need work that a 2010s mould does not.
  • Decal sheet, if visible through the end flap. Yellowed carrier film is a warning. Decals can be replaced, but budget for it.
  • Instructions. A short, clear sheet with a parts map beats a long one with vague arrows.

If the seller will open the box, look for short shots, sink marks on visible surfaces, flash along the edges and ejector pin marks on the inside of a fuselage or hull where they will be seen through a canopy or an open hatch. Count the clear parts. Canopies are the piece most often missing from a second-hand kit and the hardest to replace.

How do you judge a model from photographs?

Buying a built model at a distance is a photography problem before it is a modelling problem.

Ask for four images: a straight side view, a straight front or bow view, a top view, and a close shot of the join lines. Side views hide seams. Top views show whether the wings or decks are level and whether the alignment is true. The close shot tells you how the builder handled joints, which is where most finished models fail.

Light matters more than resolution. A model photographed in hard direct flash loses all surface detail and hides sink marks. Diffused daylight from a window, with the model on a plain grey card, shows shape and finish honestly. If every photo is a three-quarter view from slightly above, ask why. That angle flatters almost anything.

For ships, ask specifically for the rigging and the deck fittings. Loose shrouds, slack lines and glue bloom around stanchions are visible in a decent photograph and expensive to put right. For aircraft, ask for the undercarriage and the propeller or intake area, where alignment errors show.

Defects in old kits, and when to keep a model

Old kits fail in predictable ways. Decals crack or yellow. Plastic becomes brittle, so small parts snap instead of bending. Vinyl tyres harden and split. White metal oxidises. Resin parts from short-run kits may have been warped from new, and a warped wing or hull will not sit true no matter how carefully you assemble it.

Before you keep anything, decide what the model is for. A model worth keeping is one where the shape is right, the alignment is true, the finish is even and the subject means something to you. A model worth passing on is one with a warped main structure, heavy glue damage on visible surfaces, or a finish so thick that detail has disappeared. Those are not restoration projects, they are replacements.

Cleaning is part of keeping. A soft brush and a blower remove dust without touching the surface. Water and household cleaners lift decals and dull clear coats. Keep models out of direct sun, which fades paint and yellows clear parts, and away from radiators and windowsills where temperature swings work on joints.

Cases, depth and light

A case is not decoration, it is the difference between a model that stays presentable and one that needs cleaning every month.

Acrylic is lighter, cheaper and clearer when new, but it scratches and attracts dust through static. Glass is heavier, more expensive and stays clear for decades. For a single large ship, glass is usually the better long-term choice. For a shelf of 1/72 aircraft, acrylic boxes stacked and rotated are practical.

Depth is the measurement people get wrong. A case needs clearance above the highest point, which for a rigged ship means the top of the masts, and enough room at the sides to lift the model in and out without touching the sides. Allow at least a hand's width of headroom above the tallest point and a few centimetres on every side. A case that fits exactly will be a case you damage the model getting into.

Light should come from above and slightly to the front, diffused, never from a bare bulb close to the surface. LED strips along the top of a case give even light with little heat. Avoid spotlights aimed at one area: they bleach that patch of paint over years and leave the rest in shadow. A neutral background, mid grey or off white, reads better than black for most subjects and does not swallow dark camouflage.

A short glossary

  • Short shot. Plastic that did not fill the mould, leaving a rounded or missing edge.
  • Sink mark. A shallow dent on a visible surface caused by thick plastic cooling unevenly.
  • Flash. Thin plastic leaking between mould halves, trimmed off before assembly.
  • Ejector pin mark. A circular mark left where the mould pushed the part out, often on an inner surface.
  • Glue bloom. A white haze where solvent vapour attacked the surrounding plastic or clear coat.
  • Rigging. The lines and stays that hold masts and spars in place on a ship or an early aircraft.

None of this is complicated. Choose a kit you can finish, inspect the box before money changes hands, and give the finished model a case with real depth and soft light from above. The model will look the same in ten years as it does the week you put it in.
